In the Incarnation, God took on a body and became man. In the divine liturgy we unite with this divine Body. God incarnated to leave us His sacred Body to consume, thereby uniting with Him and obtaining life through Him.

As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.

Christ explained that we are invited to eat Him in reality, not just symbolically. We eat His real Body in the form of bread and drink His real blood in the form of wine.

He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.

— John 6:56

Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

— John 6:54

For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.

— John 6:55

The liturgy has made the life of the Lord Jesus present each day on the altar. In every liturgy, we remember and live the life of Christ in all its details: His passion, death, resurrection, ascension, and His second coming. The presence of Christ is with us.

God is in her midst; she shall not be shaken;
God shall help her early in the morning.

— Psalm 45:6

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

— 1 Corinthians 11:24
